Review B Schools thoroughly before making a choice

There are over a thousand B-schools in India, and about half a dozen rankings. In such a scenario, finding the right B-school becomes quite a task. What matters is not obtaining an MBA, but doing a program that is respected and recognized. Once you identify your dream B-school, go all out to make sure that you get in.

What does the B-school offer?

You need to take a look at the school, its learning environment and the programs offered, whether approved and certified by ’All India Council for Technical Eduction’ (AICTE) - the official governing body responsible for regulation of higher education in India; curriculum, full-time faculty, campus services and the student body. A good infrastructure assures sound technical and logistical support.

What is the balance between faculty and research?

It is a top B-school’s ability to attract and retain top-class faculty and its emphasis on the quality of research that separates it from others. Most business schools strive for a balance of both. All top B-schools have a strong focus on research and provide extensive, contextual and relevant study material.

What is the placement record?

Find out the program’s acceptability from the point of view of the list of potential recruiters you have in mind, analyze this through the B-school’s placement statistics of the last three years, the number of students that were picked by top-notch companies and the differential placements of the various B-schools. In this regard, also find out how active is the placement cell and/or the alumni network

6 Parameters For Selecting the Right B-School

"You can’t judge the B-schools at face value, you have to explore the options of the available MBA institutions and select what is the best for you."

Getting an MBA degree from one of the reputed B-schools makes a world of difference to your educational as well as the professional career. It is not only because you can get quality education from top class faculties but also that a brand name will stay with you throughout your life. Hence, before enrolling into any MBA program, it is vital and logical to evaluate the MBA institutes.

Here are some questions that you must ask yourself before selecting an MBA institute for pursuing an MBA.

1. How is the B-School Ranked?
However, considering the ranks of the MBA institutions is one of the best ways to start searching for a best organization. In the past few years, many surveys have been conducted to rank the reputed B-schools in India. Also there are organizations that have gained fame for quality education and other facilities. You can compare the current and past records of other MBA institutes to find the right organization for you.

2. Which Subject Do You Choose to Specialize in?
The scopes of MBA are no more limited to marketing, finance or accounting. Apart from these traditional subjects for specializations, the applicants are flooded with options such as foreign trade, system management, rural management, etc. Unfortunately, not all the MBA institutes offer all kind of specializations. So, if you are selecting a B-school, find out if that particular organization is offering the subject you want to specialize in.

3. What is the Recruitment Record?
Find out the placement statistics of the B-schools in the last three years and analyze the number of students in an organizations picked by the top notch companies. Make a list of the MBA institutes whose students have been selected by the companies that you want to work with. It is better if that particular school has global recruiters.

4. Does the School Offer Financial Aid?
Most of the MBA programs are expensive, but the financial constraint shouldn’t stop you from pursuing an MBA course from one the reputed B-Schools. The top ten B-schools offer financial aid to their students. However, there are many banks that readily approve student loans that are not required to be repaid till the student gets a job. Some of the MBA institutions also offer scholarships to the students based on their merits.

5. What are the Teaching Methods and Academic Considerations?
Faculties and teaching methods are main consideration of MBA institutions. The top B-schools primarily focus on research and discuss the problems involved in the real world of business. However, if you are selecting an MBA institute, give emphasis on the faculties and the methods of teaching they are following. The practical methods of teaching can catapult the ability of the students to deal with their responsibility at the highest level.

6. Are You going to Get International Focus?
The businesses across the world are undergoing a significant change as a part of globalization. Hence, chances are high for the MBA students to have global recruiters. The schools having international focus will offer more case studies and placement facilities, and you can get exposure in diverse fields.

These are the major areas of consideration while selecting one of the best B-schools for your bright future.

University of Aberdeen Business School to deliver MBA in India

The University of Aberdeen is set to deliver business courses in India after strengthening its ties in South Asia.
The University's Business School today (Friday, April 24) signed a new agreement with Bangalore Management Academy to deliver its Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme.
The initiative, which will see students begin study in September, builds on the successful delivery of an LLM (Law) degree in Bangalore by the University's Law School.
Indian students will have the opportunity to visit Scotland as part of the Bangalore MBA, which will be taught and assessed by Aberdeen staff.
Professor Angela Black, Head of the Business School said: "It has long been recognised by the Scottish Government and universities that Scotland's excellent education provision has a great deal to offer to all students".
"We want to enable those students who do not have the opportunity to travel to Scotland to have the same educational benefits as those who can. So we are delighted to be part of a collaborative arrangement that will facilitate the delivery of the MBA programmes overseas."
Mr Ajith Thacholi, Executive Director of the Bangalore Mangaement Academy, said he was "looking forward to a long and productive relationship" with the University.
Professor Chris Gane, Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Arts and Social Sciences added: "This is an excellent opportunity for us to promote collaboration with institutions in India which ultimately promote the exchange of ideas and knowledge between our two countries. We look forward to meeting the students in September."

Are Business Schools Recognizing the Changing Trends?

You just have to log on to the Internet to notice the changing trends in the marketing world. There is a flurry of activity in social networking sites. Everyone is busy marketing their products and services. The communication between the marketer and the consumer has changed rapidly. Technology is struggling to keep abreast with the whims of the marketers. In this context, are the business schools providing MBA in marketing toeing the line to produce better professionals?

There are only a handful of colleges who provide a comprehensive course in MBA in marketing. In fact, every MBA program has to be backed by marketing. But for students who make marketing their core subject, the faculty in the business schools holds the key to their success. The teachers of MBA in marketing should be research-oriented and should have the talent to imbibe the students with their knowledge. It has been noticed that whenever a professor gains recognition through publication of his work, the college also always gains popularity.

Marketing has to be more innovative today and establish newer methods of communicating with the consumer. Authentic and innovative ideas often catch the eye. Thus, MBA in marketing should be so structured that the students not only learn the basics of marketing but should also train their mind to evolve with time. Their curriculum should contain current and future trends. Only then we will create students of MBA in marketing who are well-versed to deal with change whether they become sole proprietors, join leading companies, or even become the President.

Dealing With Negative Attitudes in a Positive Way

How to turn around negative attitudes? All organizations must have felt the need to deal with this problem quite regularly. Unavoidable incidents in the organization like downsizing, budget restraints, or workload increases can sometimes dampen the energy of the employees leading to a negative attitude. The direct repercussions are complaining, finding reasons for avoiding things, and emphasizing that there is no scope for improvement in the organization. The worst part of such a negative attitude is that it is contagious. It spreads like wildfire among the employees.

The management needs to get a hold of things in such a situation. It should start by making positive announcements and setting standards for the employees to follow. The management needs to confront the staff and clearly outline its expectations. It needs to hold the employees accountable for their actions. Leading by example and providing positive energy will spur the employees to do their best.

It is in favour of the management to acknowledge negativity and try to infuse positive energy whenever possible. The causes for negative behaviour have to be found as well as the way to deal with it. It pays to accentuate the positives too. By promoting a good act and giving positive recognition for it, the employees are inspired to give their best performance.

Managers play a key role in taking care of negative attitudes. It is the way they deal with the staff and perform small little positive actions that stimulate their personnel to excel in their fields. Not only can they control negativity but also take the organisation to the next level.
